Stanislav Grof, MD, is the founder of the International Transpersonal Association, recipient of the Václav Havel Vision 97 Award for his research of consciousness and the human psyche, cocreator (with Christina Grof) of Holotropic Breathwork (HB), and coauthor (with Christina Grof) of Holotropic Breathwork: A New Approach to Self-Exploration and Therapy (Excelsior Editions/SUNY Press; August 1, 2010; $19.95 pb; $60.00 hc).

Grof’s initial research was in psychedelic therapy, and he then moved on to create and practice Holotropic Breathwork, a non-drug method that offers profound healing potential and encourages the “turn toward wholeness,” which is the literal meaning of “holotropic.” A simple and powerful approach to self-exploration, Holotropic Breathwork integrates insights from modern consciousness research, anthropology, various depth psychologies, transpersonal psychology, Eastern spiritual practices, and mystical traditions of the world.
